Stamford Close in Hooe, is located on the outskirts of Plymouth, between the villages of Plymstock and Turnchapel. It is a large private residential estate, consisting of 82 distinctive grey brick built bungalows. They are situated on a beautiful green triangular shaped plot, approximately 200m from the extensive South West Coastal path and the picturesque Jennycliff Bay, with its stunning views over the historic Plymouth Sound.
The unique and interestingly laid out bungalows are a mixture of 2, 3 & 4 bedroomed properties, which are configured as Terraced, Semi Detached and Detached. All properties have their own private, south facing walled gardens, overlooking the Staddon Height's pastures. There are also many beautiful green areas around the site, including numerous well-tended communal gardens and a large meadow that is home to numerous species of wildlife.
Built in the late 1960's for the Ministry of Defence, the "Remarkable Architectural Adventure" - Stamford Close was originally designed, as spacious married quarters for Royal Navy personnel and their families, as part of the preparation for the return of families from overseas on the run down from Singapore. It is rumoured that the estate won a number of design awards, with the Navy News commenting, in their July 1969 edition entitled LIFE IN THE KASBAH, that the houses were "Reminiscent of a cluster of habitations on a hillside in Palestine". They are indeed very distinctive and are unique to the UK.
However in 1981, due to fleet reduction, the estate was auctioned off to a private contractor, who purchased the plot of 82 houses and 22 garages for £550,000 after the local council turned down the opportunity to develop the site. The new owners renovated the bungalows and released them, in stages, for sale to the public, virtually doubling their value overnight.
As new homeowners took possession of their individual bungalows, they were awarded a share in the newly formed "Stamford Court Management Company Ltd", becoming custodians of the large triangular green plot that the estate sits on.
This 'Limited' company, has a team of owner/residents, who run the management of the estate (classed as an RMC - Residential Management Company), including the gardens, the meadows and wildlife area, the pathways / pavements, street lighting and the roads / parking areas within the estate boundary. The members and owners on the estate elect the team at each AGM.
Stamford Close is an idyllic place to live. We have peace and quiet, a lovely community spirit, fantastic rural views, abundant wildlife and a friendly and ever helpful Management Team on site.
